Ayurveda Principles for Healthy Hair

Ayurveda for Great Hair

Ayurveda is the traditional Indian medicine practiced for more than 5000 years. Ayurveda means “the science of Life” (Ayur=life, veda=science).

The reason for hair fall is basically the weak scalp skin and lack of nutrition in the hair roots. According to Ayurveda, external factors like exposure to sun, wind, dirt etc. do not play a major role in hair fall. The real problem is the loophole in the internal body metabolism. A fortress cannot be captured if the defenses are strong!

The real factors for hair fall according to Ayurveda are

Stress: The biggest culprit for the hair fall is the stress. Ayurveda says that the body is a reflection of the mind. It is like if you have a pimple on your face, it will reflect on the mirror. And therefore there is no point in cleaning the mirror if you have a pimple, the skin has to be cured. In the same way, if you are stressed to the brink you are bound to lose hair like crazy, no matter what you do.

Improper digestion: According to Ayurveda, we are what we absorb and not what we eat.

Improper nutrition: Hair is made from protein, so it does not mean that consuming more protein will be good for your hair. In fact, proteins are acids. According to Ayurveda, excess protein can cause dryness in the body and lead to hair fall. Have a normal balanced diet and it will do wonders for your hair.

Bad hair management: frequent use of chemical based shampoos, conditioners, dyes, gels etc. can cause rapid hair fall. It can even lead to baldness in the long run.

Here are few simple ayurvedic remedies to prevent hair fall:

The priceless way to avoid stress is Pranayam or Indian deep breathing exercises. So, breathe deep, stay calm and be beautiful!

Eat mainly plant-based diet, drink lots of water and exercise daily for a great digestion and great hair.

Nutrition is the base for great hair. Try to include following foods in your diet – coconut, Indian gooseberry, turmeric, ginger, asafoetida, coriander, cumin, and fenugreek.

Oiling: Oil your hair minimum once a week and keep it overnight. Oiling keeps your scalp moisturized and healthy. A healthy scalp can protect the hair roots from getting exposed, thus dramatically reducing the hair fall. Oiling also protects the scalp from multiple other hair problems like dandruff, itching, lice etc.

Coconut oil is the best for hair. However, if you have extremely dry hair with rapid hair fall, mustard oil will give you the best results.

Massage: Scalp massage is a great way to increase the blood circulation to the hair roots. It gives better results as compared to plain oiling. Massage your head with hair oil before going to sleep and wash your hair in the morning. Overnight oiling gives time for the oil to percolate inside the scalp skin.

Try using soap nut for hair wash instead of shampoos. It gives cleansing as well as conditioning effect to the hair. It is also very effective in the prevention of hair fall.

Try to use henna as a conditioner. Henna gives incredible glow and smoothness to hair. It has anti-microbial properties that protect the scalp from any kind of infections.

Afro hair is normally curly. Such hair should be tied as long as possible. Lose hair face more damage from the wind, compared to the hair tied in ponytail or braids. Roots of lose hair become weak and cause rapid hair fall when exposed to even slight wind.
